Water and Energy Consultants' Association, Nepal (WECAN)

Background

Water and Energy Consultants' Association, Nepal (WECAN) was founded by a series of discussions made at formal and informal basis merely based on the Gyapan Patra submitted to Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) dated July 12, 2009. Altogerther 32, consulting companies had signed this document while Submitting in AEPC. 

Discussion on concept paper was made in July 17, 2009 in the presence of micro hydro consultants working in micro/mini hydro sector. After this, first formal meeting was made in July 31,2009 and this meeting decided to register separate body of consultants' working in this sector so that the pertinent issues could be raised at different level,  technical capability could be strengthened and institutional development will be flourished by common effort. This meeting formulated 5 member task force and a team of advisory body was created from micro/mini hydro experts. 

A series of meetings were carried out for creating WECAN. The meeting of July 25, 2009 named this organization as Hydropower Consultants' Association of Nepal (HYCAN) and the chairperson of HYCAN was decided as Prof. Dr. Ramesh Kumar Maskey but its name was revised as Water and Energy Consultants' Association Nepal (WECAN) by the meeting of July 26, 2009. WECAN was formally registered in District Administrative Office , Kathmandu in September 14, 2009.

VISION
To become key player in the development of water and energy sectors by providing quality services at national and international level

MISSION 
To maximize the role of Nepalese experts through the creation of consortium of consultants working in water and energy sectors

Objectives

 The main objectives of this organization are as following:

  • Supporting Consultants' values, rights and maintaining professionalism. 
  • Coordinating at national and international level for carrying out seminars, workshops, trainings and consulting services.
  • Creating awareness about the importance of water and energy by media.
  • Creating WECAN fund internally involving consulting firms and individual consultants so that it can support for strengthening the technical capability of  water and energy sector within the country 
  • Creating a common platform for all water and energy consultants working within and abroad country so that it could even support for long term economic development of the country.

Strategies

 Following works may be carried out for the sustainable establishment of WECAN

  • Carrying out ( WECAN Trainings -trainings, workshops, seminars and exhibitions etc.) to meet the technical demand within and outside the country in micro/mini hydro sector.
  • Creating a Cooperative of consultants (WECAN Cooperative) working in Water and Energy Sector.
  • Establishing WECAN Fund.
  • Coordination and cooperation at Government and Non Government level  in Water and Energy sector.
  • Coordinating and cooperating with different organizations (DoED, NEA, AEPC etc.) for carrying out consulting services of hydropower projects upto 5 MW by WECAN consultants.
  • Publishing WECAN Bulletin.
  • Coordinating other organizations and individuals with similar objectives working directly or indirectly from inside and outside the country.
  • Establishing  various fund  raising programs 
  • Raising issues towards promoting engineering values, principles and rights
