Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) was created on August 16, 1985 (Bhadra 1, 2042) under the Nepal Electricity Authority Act. 1984, through the merger of the Department of Electricity of Ministry of Water Resources, Nepal Electricity Corporation and related Development Boards. To remedy the inherent weakness associated with these fragmented electricity organizations with overlapping and duplication of works, merger of this individual organisation became necessary to achieve efficiency and reliable service.
Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) is a Government institution established on November 3, 1996 under the then Ministry of Science and Technology with the objective of developing and promoting renewable/alternative energy technologies in Nepal. Currently, it is under Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment. It functions independently, and has a eleven member board with representatives from government sector, industry sector and non-governmental organizations.
Energy Minister Janardan Sharma has been the talk of town lately because of his initiation to reform the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) and free the Capital from load shedding, while minimising power outages throughout the country.
